OuTSMARting the immune system

OuTSMARting the immune system to prevent transplant rejection

OuTSMART, lead by chief investigator Professor Anthony Dorling, successfully began recruiting patients at Guy’s Hospital in September 2013. This trial is aimed at determining if a combined screening /treatment programme can prevent premature failure of kidney transplants due to chronic rejection in patients with Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) antibodies (this is when HLA proteins alert the immune system that a donor kidney is ‘foreign’ and cause the body to reject the kidney) .

To date a total of 68 participants have been randomly selected to the trial at Guy’s Hospital. Screening of participants has begun at St James’s University Hospital Leeds and recruitment at other collaborating sites including The Royal London Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and University Hospital Birmingham will commence over the coming months.
